About Coaching - Does it work for everyone?

If you're ready for a change. . .  if you'd like something to be different and want to explore what it would take to make it happen, coaching could be the catalyst you need.
Coaching is for people who are ready to move from the thinking stage into action.  It may take time to refine your vision but the goal of talking and processing is for action. Coaching is not for people who prefer to stay stuck - Action Steps are key.

While the first action steps may be very small, the progress seen is usually very energizing and the pace increases in an organic, natural way.  I'm truly amazed at what my clients accomplish ~ and so are they!

What Makes Coaching an

Effective Means of Personal Growth?

Growth comes when we take steps and move forward.
The way adults learn and implement or apply their learning is best explained by Malcom Knowles.
Malcom Knowles(1913 - 1997) was the pioneeer in exploring the field of Adult Learning.  While we don't normally consider coaching  "learning," his findings confirm that the coaching method is in line with how adults internalize information and apply it to themselves.  His findings have been repeatedly recognized and confirmed as the most effective means for understanding and utilizing information for personal growth.  His findings are in plain text.  How I relate them to coaching is in italics.
  • Adults are self directed.  They are autonomous and will pick and choose what new information to apply.  An awareness of their freedom to be self directed is empowering.  The client sets the agenda for each coaching session and the coach facilitates application of what a client knows.
  • People experience the fastest and most powerful learning when they are challenged to access their own knowledge (new or old) rather than being fed information.  The key to good coaching is asking powerful questions.
  • An understanding of how they can attain their goals  is paramount in the application of knowledge. Coaches help articulate the baby steps the lead to the goal and hold the goal high.
  • Adults have an array of experiences.  Family or origin, current family situations,  jobs, education and life in general which all play into how and what they will learn.  Connecting their life's experiences to their goals helps them internalize and utilize information.  Through the coaching relationship the coach gains insight into the whole person and will reflect back how their life experiences are foundational and supportive of their goals.
  • Because adults are goal-oriented, they usually know what goal they want to attain.  By articulating their goals they are able to use their learning to move them closer to their goals.  Sometimes coaches just help connect the dots.
  • Adults are relevancy-oriented.  Therefore, focussing on what is most important to them and allowing them to set their own agenda and goals is beneficial.   The client's agenda is the coaches agenda.
  • Adults are practical and will focus on the aspects of  what will be most useful to them in their life and/or work. To expect them to be interested in knowledge for its own sake is of little value.  They need to be keenly aware of how it will benefit them.  The coach is not a teacher and only shares relevant  information when the client is open to it. ie. when they want to brainstorm.
  • An environment of mutual respect is key.  Acknowledging the validity of one's experiences, their equality, their intrinsic value as a person, and allowing them to voice their opinions freely without judgement greatly enhances the potential of an adult's learning. These are all part of the coaches code of ethics.
